PAD Transportation Surveys Committee Activities

The Transportation Surveys Committee is comprised of representatives from the state Department's of Transportation (DOT). These representatives include engineers, surveyors, photogrammetrists, and technicians currently employed in the fields of Geodesy, Surveying, Photogrammetry, and GIS. These individuals and their respective organizations are responsible for providing relevant and accurate location information for the design of new, and the improvement of existing transportation system.

BYLAWS

Purpose: The Transportation Surveys Committee functions within the framework of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and its Photogrammetric Applications Division to advance the science and application of photogrammetric engineering and remote sensing in the field of transportation engineering. Specific areas of concern include reconnaissance and surveys for environmental studies, long and short range planning, preliminary design, location of properties, utilities, and right of way, final design, construction, and systems operation.

Objectives:

  1. To provide leadership and to motivate others to enter the field of photogrammetric engineering and remote sensing in the area of transportation engineering.
  2. To collect and disseminate information on the practice of photogrammetry as it relates to highways and other areas of transportation engineering.
  3. To encourage recognition of professional status for photogrammetric engineers in this area of practice.
  4. To cooperate with the Specifications and Standards Committee of the ASPRS/PAD in the process of developing and setting standards of photogrammetric accuracy and completeness.
  5. To foster and encourage acquisition of sufficient engineering data through full utilization of photogrammetry for making surveys of the scope, detail, and the accuracy desirable.
  6. To counsel others on the proper applications of photogrammetry and to encourage free exchange of information among state, federal, and private transportation and highway organizations.

Organization: The Committee will consist of any persons whose interests lie within the combined fields of photogrammetry and transportation, particularly state, federal highway and transportation officials. Individuals from the private sector are eligible if they are engaged in the use of photogrammetry for transportation engineering and associated purposes. The membership of the committee shall not be restricted to members of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, but membership is strongly encouraged.

From among members of the Committee, a Chairman, Deputy Chairman, and Past Chairman shall be selected and approved by vote during the spring convention of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, each to serve for a term of one year. The Chairman shall automatically become the Past Chairman and the Deputy Chairman shall assume the chairmanship at the next annual spring convention, and a new Deputy Chairman shall be elected. This will provide for a period of three one(1)-year terms for each individual selected â€" one year as Deputy, one year as Chairman, and one year as Past Chairman.

Function:  The Committee Shall:

  1. Conduct an annual meeting at the ASPRS spring convention and, if practical, conduct a meeting at the fall convention.
  2. Solicit and stimulate the cooperation and interest of agencies and professional organizations involved in transportation engineering.
  3. Provide support to the ASPRS and, particularly, the Photogrammetric Applications Division, by assisting in the development and presentation of technical programs and symposia at national, regional, and chapter meetings.
  4. Maintain a current roster of committee members.
  5. Sponsor, organize, and conduct special symposia on the technical aspects of photogrammetry as they apply to transportation engineering.
  6. Solicit, encourage, and review technical papers for publication in "Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing" and other technical journals.
  7. In cooperation with the Specifications and Standards Committee of the ASPRS/PAD, develop and appropriately define photogrammetric standards, as deemed necessary, to improve and coordinate the work of organizations involved in transportation engineering.
