Welcome to the Southwest US Region of ASPRS

Thank you for visiting our website. The officers of the Region are committed to providing a worthwhile program of events for its 300 members, to attracting new members and to fostering upcoming photogrammetry and remote sensing professionals through Student Chapters. Student enthusiasm and faculty support have led to the establishment of Student Chapters at San Diego State University, Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.

We have two upcoming attractions. Regional Director Ramon Ramos has organized an interesting agenda, with a practical slant, for a technical meeting on 26 March 2008, generously hosted by Airborne 1 at their facility in El Segundo, CA. Secondly, thanks to Vice President Soe Myint, member Libby Wentz and Past President Steve Yool, the Region is running a joint Geography Session with the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science (ANAS), during the 52nd Annual Meeting of ANAS, at Southwestern College, Phoenix, AZ, on 29 March 2008. This Session includes papers authored by members from our Region and reports results of field studies conducted within the Region. Please try to attend one of these events - you may be surprised how enjoyable and fulfilling it is not only to hear presentations but also to network with other members from the Region.

Tempus fugit - in only two years our Region will be sponsoring the 2010 ASPRS Annual Conference in San Diego!

I joined ASPRS in 1973 and was a "lurker", paying my dues, receiving the journal and purchasing books during my post-graduate education and various jobs in Canada and UK. In 1987 I was hooked by my first Annual Conference. My involvement increased to President of the Southwest US Region as it struggled back to life after some years in the wilderness. Now I try to balance National Director for the Region and Co-Chair of the newly instituted Defense Photogrammetry Committee with work and home. ASPRS is a vibrant, healthy organization - I urge members to become involved, support the Society, nurture the profession. And if you have not yet earned Certified Photogrammetrist or one of the other ASPRS certifications, give it very serious thought. Join in!

If you have ideas and/or want to volunteer for upcoming events or activities, please contact us. A very simple mechanism exists to encourage our efforts: the more activities we accomplish, the more funding we receive from ASPRS headquarters to run our Region! Your involvement will energize you and make a difference to our Region and profession. Thank you.

Very best wishes,

Stewart Walker
