Logistical Information
Morning and Afternoon refreshments are provided, but lunch is on your own. Check out some nearby choices with this information about the Park Student Union as well as a map of restaurants and merchants along University Avenue.
For those traveling from out of town, a list of hotels near the UA (Park Student Union) is also attached. The only walkable choice is the Marriot-University Park (first on the list).
For visitors with cars, there are two parking garages nearby: Tyndall Garage and the Sixth Street Garage (see map). The cost for parking an entire day at the garage is $8.00.
Keynote speaker: Dr. Abraham Miller-Rushing, speaking on:
How Climate Change is Restructuring Ecological Communities"
Among his many eccentric activities, Thoreau kept meticulous records of flowering and other phenological events. Dr. Miller-Rushing will describe how he and his colleagues have used Thoreau's records to provide novel insights into rapid, climate-driven changes in plant and animal populations.
Symposium Co-Chairs:
Michaela Buenemann, Assistant Professor-Geography, New Mexico St. U, elabuen@nmsu.edu
Kathryn Thomas, Ecologist, USA-NPN & USGS kathryn_a_thomas@usgs.gov
Cynthia Wallace, Research Geographer, USGS cwallace@usgs.gov
Faculty, professionals, students and citizen scientists are invited to present their research related to "Phenology Research and Observations of Southwest Landscapes" in either oral or poster format. Participants are strongly encouraged to contribute phenological themes that relate to climate change, natural resource management, farming and ranching activities, or human health.
The symposium is coordinated in conjunction with the Research Insights in Semiarid Ecosystems (RISE) Symposium to be held Saturday, October 3rd, 2009.
