PE&RS February 2000Cover Image

This Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) image was acquired on September 1, 1999 over the Turpan Depression, Xinjiang Province, Peoples Republic of China (Worldwide Reference System-2 path 141/row 30). This false color composite image was constructed from bands 7 (red), 5 (green), and 2 (blue) that were each contrast enhanced. The Bogda Shan mountains, which in some areas reach 5445 meters elevation, trend east-to-west in the upper portion of the image. Natural vegetation and agricultural lands are evident as various shades of green; non-vegetated alluvium ranges in color (white, grey, brown). The prominent tan and light-brown feature in the lower right section of the image is comprised of sand dunes associated with the Turpan Depression, which is the second lowest depression on Earth (approximately 154 meters below sea level).

Landsat 7 was launched by NASA on April 15,1999. Data from Landsat 7 are available from the U. S. Geological Survey’s EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, SD (http://landsat7.usgs.gov).

155 Recomputation of the Global Mars Control-Point Network
W. Zeitler, T. Ohlhof, and H. Ebner

This new set of orientation parameters and ground points may be used for local, regional, and global DTM generation; for the determination of reference bodies; for mapping purposes; as well as for current and future missions to mars.

163 Continuous Piecewise Geometric Rectification for Airborne Multispectral Scanner Imagery
Minhe Ji and John R. Jensen

A description of the procedure is presented along with two case studies, each having a different set of sensor and terrain characteristics, to illustrate the advantages of this approach versus traditional techniques.

173 A Standardized Radiometric Normalization Method for Change Detection Using Remotely Sensed Imagery
Joon Heo and Thomas W. FitzHugh

A standardized computation procedure for image normalization is proposed, which consists of a band-by-band linear regression system and a studentized residual method for outlier determination.

183 Estimation of Canopy-Average Surface-Specific Leaf Area Using Landsat TM Data
Leo Lymburner, Paul J. Beggs, and Carol R. Jacobson

How changes in leaf optical properties, which are associated with changes in specific leaf area, is described, and how remotely sensed canopy reflectances can be used to estimate specific leaf area is described.

193 Radiation-Vegetation Relationships in Eucalyptus Forest
Lalit Kumar and Andrew K. Skidmore

Radiation-vegetation relationships for 12 species of Eucalyptus from the south coast of New South Wales showed that the mean radiation values differed significantly between species.

205 Detecting Wetland Change:  A Rule-Based Approach Using NWI and SPOT-XS Data
Paula F. Houhoulis and William K. Michener

Mean modulus values, predominant land cover, and National Wetland Inventory (NWI) data were used to develop a rule-based system that successfully detected altered wetlands and updated NWI data.

213 Quantification of Chlorophyll in Reservoirs of the Little Washita River Watershed Using Airborne Video
M.M. Avard, F.R. Schiebe, and J.H. Everitt

Results indicate that the relationship between emergent radiance and chlorophyll concentration is best described by the model y = a0(1 - e-x/c), and that the ability to estimate chlorophyll-a concentration in reservoirs using airborne video imagery has a great deal of potential.
