PE&RS March 2000Cover Image

This month’s cover features a direct digital, color infrared (CIR) image of agricultural land on Oahu, Hawaii. It was collected with the Emerge proprietary sensor and processed under contract to USDA APFO. The image will be used as a portion of a Digital Ortho Quarter Quadrangle (DOQ) with a 1-meter ground sample distance (GSD), formatted to the National Digital Ortho Photo (NDOP) specification. Data typical of the three-channel CIR (optional color) data that Emerge collects and automatically rectifies. The rectification process uses Inertial and GPS data from the aircraft, as well as DEM data supplied by USGS. The result is a digital orthorectified image product that meets National Map Accuracy Standards, without the use of ground control. The sensor and the techniques allow for a timely and cost-effective product that can be collected even under challenging conditions such as the weather in Hawaii, which is known for cumulous clouds.

287 Generation of Hierarchical Multiresolution Terrain Databases Using Wavelet Filtering
Donald E. McArthur, Robert W. Fuentes, and Venkat Devaragan

The experiments and corresponding results for an approach to automatically generate a hierarchical multiresolution terrain database utilizing discrete wavelet transforms is described.

297 Application of DEM Data to Landsat Image Classification:  Evaluation in a Tropical  Wet-Dry Landscape of Thailand
Apisit Eiumnoh and Rajendra P. Shrestha

TM data alone gave a classification accuracy of 65.3 percent while an unsupervised technique along with DEM data gave an accuracy of 77.5 percent and a supervised technique with DEM data gave an accuracy of 84.3 percent.

305 Integrating Spectral, Spatial, and   Terrain Variables for Forest Ecosystem  Classification
Paul Treitz and Philip Howarth

Inclusion of textural and geomorphometric variables with high-resolution CASI reflectance data provides improved discrimination of forest ecosystem classes in a low-relief boreal environment.

319 Using High Spatial Resolution Multispectral Data to Classify Corn and Soybean Crops
Gabriel B. Senay, John G. Lyon, Andy D. Ward, and Sue E. Nokes

Maximum distinction between corn and soybeans was achieved using the near-infrared bands when the crops were mature, while the visible bands were more useful when the soybeans were senescing.

329 Application of Multispectral Imagery to Assessment of a Hydrodynamic Simulation of an Effluent Stream Entering the Clinch River
Alfred J. Garrett, John M. Irvine, Amy D. King,  Thomas K. Evers, Daniel A. Levine, Clell Ford, and  John L. Smyre

Imagery of thermal and turbidity plumes and ground-truth data are used to assess hydrodynamic simulations of a tributary flowing into the Clinch River, including an estimate of the tributary’s flow rate derived from the simulations.

337 Detection of Landslide Areas Using Satellite Radar Interferometry
Hiroshi Kimura and Yasushi Yamaguchi

The application of SAR interferometry to the detection of a landslide by the three-pass method and the digital elevation model elimination (DEME) method is described.
