PE&RS November 2000Cover Image

The cover for November shows a mosaic of the United States prepared by using 16 images from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors on the meteorological satellites NOAA-8 and NOAA-9. The images were acquired between May 24, 1984 and May 14, 1986 (Courtesy USGS). The logos represent the nine universities that make up NASA’s Affiliated Research Center Program at their approximate geographic location.  For more information on the Affiliated Research Program or any other activity at NASA’s Commercial Remote Sensing Program please call Dr. Bruce Davis at 228.688.2042.

1323 A GIS-Assisted Rail Construction Econometric Model that Incorporates LIDAR Data
David J. Cowen, John R. Jensen, Chad Hendrix, Mike Hodgson and Steven R. Schill

A remote sensing and GIS-assisted railroad lead-track route selection model using LIDAR data for rapidly identifying a variety of potential routes based on the most important cost factors was developed.

1329 Comparison of High Spatial Resolution Imagery for Efficient Generation of GIS Vegetation Layers
Lloyd Coulter, Douglas Stow, Allen Hope, John O’Leary, Debbie Turner, Pauline Longmire, Seth Peterson, and John Kaiser

Image-based interpretive mapping using high spatial resolution airborne imagery and derived products with minimal field reconnaissance was performed and evaluated against a detailed vegetation map created through field mapping and airphoto interpretation.

1337 Developing Forestry Products from High Resolution Digital Aerial Imagery
Lindi J. Quackenbush, Paul F. Hopkins, and Gerald J. Kinn

Traditional techniques were modified and new techniques developed for digital processing of high spatial resolution imagery.

1349 Use of Remotely Sensed Data for Assessing Crop Hail Damage
Albert J. Peters, Steven C. Griffin, Andrés Viña, and Lei Ji

A tool based on remote sensing technology that can be used to help crop hail damage assessment is described and tested

1357 Spaceborne Imaging Radar in Support of Forest Resource Management
Jonathan W. Chipman, Thomas M. Lillesand, James D. Gage, and Samuel Radcliffe

The potential contribution of spaceborne radar imagery to forest inventory and related forest resource management activities is demonstrated using multiwavelength, multipolarization radar imagery over forested sites in the western Great Lakes region.

1367 Predicting Forest Stand Characteristics with Airborne Scanning Lidar
Joseph E. Means, Steven A. Acker, Brandon J. Fitt, Michael Renslow, Lisa Emerson, and Chad Hendrix

Lidar data can be used to predict the stand characteristics of height, basal area, and volume over large areas or entire forests.

1373 The Application of TM Imagery and GIS Data in the Assessment of Arid Lands Water and Land Resources in West Texas
Paul Neville, Robert I. Coward, Richard P. Watson, Michael Inglis, and Stan Morain

Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery, used in conjunction with the geospatial databases, allowed areas to be identified that showed a potential for qood-quality groundwater with arable land suitable for multiple uses.
