Cover Image
This month's cover showcases a sample of Airborne 1 Corporation's lidar data, collected over Los Angeles' University of Southern California campus and Exposition Park. The data was collected with a 2' x and y spot spacing and delivered with vertical accuracies of better than 15cm at 2' sigma.
Bottom: Bald earth lidar DEM with complete vegetation and feature removal. Middle: "All-Shots" color-coded by elevation with no vegetation removed. Top: Same as "middle" with lidar intensity raster draped on top. All data was processed by the team of lidar mapping specialists at Airborne 1 Corporation in Los Angeles, California. Cover images by Bryant Bertrand.
Airborne 1 is bringing lidar technology and expertise to the photogrammetry, survey and mapping communities. The company is conducting a "Roadshow" to bring cost-effective lidar capabilities to smaller projects nationwide. For more information about lidar please comtact Airborne 1 Corporation at 310-342-7100, visit their website at http://www.airborne1.com or send e-mail to info@airborne1.com.

1133 Detection of Regularly Spaced Targets
in Small-Footprint LIDAR Data: Research Issues for Consideration
David L. Evans, Scott D. Roberts, John W. McCombs, and Richard L. Harrington
Small-footprint LIDAR systems do not adequately sample tree tops under typical LIDAR mission conditions, and these systems sometimes fail to give ground returns in areas of dense vegetation canopy conditions.
1137 Rule-Based Classification Systems
Using Classification and Regression Tree (CART) Analysis
Rick L. Lawrence and Andrea Wright
Rule-based classifications incorporating spectral and ancillary data were readily developed using Classification and Regression Tree analysis, which is accessible through widely available statistical software.
1143 A Robust Method for Registering
Ground-Based Laser Range Images of Urban Outdoor Objects
Huijing Zhao and Ryosuke Shibasaki
A method of registering multiple ground-based laser range images is proposed for the purpose of reconstructing 3D urban outdoor objects, and the efficiency and accuracy is examined through an experiment of registering 42 outdoor laser range images.
1155 Landsat TM-Based Forest Area Estimation
Using Iterative Guided Spectral Class Rejection
Jared P. Wayman, Randolph H. Wynne, John A. Scrivani, and Gregory A. Reams
Forest area estimates from two Landsat TM-based classifications, MRLC and a new hybrid technique called Iterative Guided Spectral Class Rejection, are compared with the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis forest area estimates obtained using the traditional aerial-photography-based method.
1167 The Utility of IRS-1C LISS-III
and PAN-Merged Data for Mapping Salt-Affected Soils
R.S. Dwivedi, K.V. Ramana, S.S. Thammappa, and A.N. Singh
The potential of high spatial resolution Panchromatic (PAN) sensor data and the Linear Imaging Self-scanning Sensor (LISS-III) data from the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS-1C) for detection and delinetion of salt-affected soils in a portion of the indo-Gangetic alluvial plains of northern India is evaluated.

Using Landsat TM Imagery in La Mancha, Spain
Cecilia Martínez Beltrán and Alfonso Calera Belmonte
The discrimination procedure is based on the different crop spectral responses through time according to their phenological evolution.

Accuracy Using a Scale Factor Model
Jeong Chang Seong and E. Lynn Usery
A scale factor model of projection accuracy is developed for determining categorical pixel-value errors in the projection of raster datasets, and is applied to specific projections.
