Cover Image
The background for this month’s Journal cover is a natural vertical aerial photograph of Anchorage, Alaska, site of the 2003 ASPRS Annual Conference. AeroMap U.S. took the photograph on September 10, 2002 from an altitude of 6100 feet; north is left. The image was captured with a Zeiss TOP aerial camera using AGFA X100 film.
AeroMap pulled the center inset oblique from its archives showing Anchorage in September 1939. The bottom inset image is a lidar DEM of the city, acquired by AeroMap in June 2002. The lidar image gives a perspective view of the modern high-rise buildings that now define the skyline of Anchorage. This DEM was captured with an Airborne 1, Optech 2025 sensor system installed in one of AeroMap’s twin Cessna’s flying at approximately 130 knots at 4,100 feet.
The three numbered buildings are important landmarks. In the upper left quadrant, building number 1 is the Hilton Hotel, host hotel for the Conference. Two blocks south (right) of the Hilton the number 2 marks the Egan Convention Center, primary location for the Conference. Building number 3, with the distinctive roofline, is the Performing Arts Center, locally called the PAC.
