PE&RS April 2003Cover Image

The background for this month’s Journal cover is a natural vertical aerial photograph of Anchorage, Alaska, site of the 2003 ASPRS Annual Conference. AeroMap U.S. took the photograph on September 10, 2002 from an altitude of 6100 feet; north is left. The image was captured with a Zeiss TOP aerial camera using AGFA X100 film.

AeroMap pulled the center inset oblique from its archives showing Anchorage in September 1939. The bottom inset image is a lidar DEM of the city, acquired by AeroMap in June 2002. The lidar image gives a perspective view of the modern high-rise buildings that now define the skyline of Anchorage. This DEM was captured with an Airborne 1, Optech 2025 sensor system installed in one of AeroMap’s twin Cessna’s flying at approximately 130 knots at 4,100 feet.

The three numbered buildings are important landmarks. In the upper left quadrant, building number 1 is the Hilton Hotel, host hotel for the Conference. Two blocks south (right) of the Hilton the number 2 marks the Egan Convention Center, primary location for the Conference. Building number 3, with the distinctive roofline, is the Performing Arts Center, locally called the PAC.

341 Synergistic Fusion of GPS and Photogrammetrically Generated Elevation Models
Jon P. Mills, Simon J. Buckley, and Harvey L. Mitchell

Independently collected DEMs derived from kinematic GPS are used to orient surfaces produced by aerial photogrammetric methods by employing a least-squares surface matching algorithm.

351 Remote Sensing Texture Analysis Using Multi-Parameter and Multi-Scale Features
Yan Li and Jia-Xiong Peng

The new feature set, derived from fractional Brownian motion, is presented.

357 Comparing Texture Analysis Methods through Classification
Philippe Maillard

Three texture analysis methods, all based on different mathematical tools and all tested on high-resolution aerial photograph texture samples, are compared in dif ferent classification contexts, results are presented, and details of the experimental design for their comparison are explained.

369 Land-Use/Land-Cover Change Detection Using Improved Change-Vector Analysis
Jin Chen, Peng Gong, Chunyang He, Ruiliang Pu, and Peijun Shi

The method consists of two stages, Double-Window Flexible Pace Search, which aims at determining the threshold of change magnitude, and direction cosines of change vectors, for determining change direction (category) that combines single-date image classification with a minimum-distance categorizing technique.

381 Irrigated Vegetation Assessment for Urban Environments
Douglas Stow, Lloyd Coulter, John Kaiser, Allen Hope, Dawn Service, Katarina Schutte, and Alan Walters

The utility of Ikonos multispectral imagery and an expert classifier is evaluated for inventorying and mapping urban irrigated vegetation in the context of water demand assessment in the arid southwestern U.S.

391 Demonstrating UAV-Acquired Real-Time Thermal Data over Fires
Vincent G. Ambrosia, Steven S. Wegener, Donald V. Sullivan, Sally W. Buechel, Stephen E. Dunagan, James A. Brass, Jay Stoneburner

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), calibrated thermal imaging systems, over-the-horizon (OTH) data telemetry, and precision image geo-rectification were combined to demonstrate real-time information delivery, significantly enhancing disaster management capabilities.
