Sanborn provided this month’s cover image of South Manhattan, New York. It is an oblique view of a three-dimensional digital elevation model that has been draped with a digital orthophoto image. Sanborn developed this image using its METROTM “true” orthophoto technology, which uses a highly detailed 3-D elevation model that includes both ground and elevated structures like buildings and bridges. To create conventional digital orthophoto imagery, aerial photography is rectified using a digital elevation model of the ground only. This means elevated structures, like buildings and bridges, distort radially outward from the photo center and obstruct roads, utilities, and other ground features that otherwise would be visible in the imagery. True orthophoto technologies like METROTM eliminate this problem by rectifying bridge decks and building rooftops to their true horizontal position. The surrounding terrain is then readily visible in the orthophoto image. Sanborn has developed 3-D building models and true orthophoto imagery for several large urban areas throughout the United States. In an urban environment, these datasets can be a valuable source for accurate modeling and interactive editing in a 3-D environment.

D. Scott Lee, Jie Shan, and James S. Bethel

About 64.4 percent of the buildings can be automatically extracted and squared with a satisfactory accuracy by a classification-guided approach using Ikonos multispectral and panchromatic imagery.

151 Right-Angle Building Hypothesis Generation in Regularized Urban Areas by Pose Clustering
Arie Croitoru and Yerach Doytsher

Because the hypothesis generation scheme employed must be robust, as well as efficient, a voting scheme inspired by pose clustering for generating building location hypothesis, using a single aerial image, is introduced and analyzed.

171 Semiautomated Building Extraction Based on CSG Model-Image Fitting
Yi-Hsing Tseng and Sendo Wang

A building extraction method based on semiautomatic fitting of Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) primitives to multiple aerial images in order to acquire precise, reliable, and complete 3D data for buildings is proposed.

181 Robust Reconstruction of Building Models from Three-Dimensional Line Segments
Jiann-Yeou Rau and Liang-Chien Chen

The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can soundly rebuild the topology from 3D line segments and reconstruct building models with up to a 98 percent success rate.

Ayman F. Habib, Young-ran Lee, and Michel Morgan

The Modified Iterated Hough Transform (MIHT) to automatically solve for the relative orientation parameters and the correspondence between conjugate entities in a stereo pair is introduced.
