PE&RS June 2005Cover Image

Cover image is provided courtesy of Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografie di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) of Italy. The image is a reconstructed, digital elevation of the historical center and coastline of Trieste, Italy, captured using an airborne lidar sensor. The image was analyzed for a recent flood impact study. OGS works extensively with lidar imagery to better understand geomorphology and recently worked with RSI to develop a new tool for processing lidar data based on RSI’s IDL technology, called iLiDAR.

Francesca Pozzi and Christopher Small

Analysis of population density and vegetation distribution for several cities shows a strong correspondence in cities with high population density but considerable regional variability that precludes simple spectral classifications of land cover.

Ayman Habib and Michel Morgan

A discussion of the incorporation of straight lines for automatic calibration of digital cameras with quantitative assessment of camera stability for mapping purposes.

743 Neighborhood Systems for Airborne Laser Data
Sagi Filin and Norbert Pfeifer

Analysis of neighborhood systems that are commonly used for lidar data and a proposed new method that is more suitable for the information carried with thelaser data.
