participate. While there is never any shortage of volunteers
for coaching athletic teams, there is a paucity of willing
team mentors. In spite of all of the good things we can do
with the regional challenge, it will not be successful unless
we can find a way to better encourage volunteers to assist
with bringing the experience to students across the nation.

The Penn State Electro-Optics Center, who developed
and executes the program, is one of the Defense Related
Research Units of the Pennsylvania State University. They
are the Navy’s ManTech Center of Excellence in Electro-
Optics and a part of the Penn State Applied Research Lab’s
Navy University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). They
are located in Freeport, PA and have recognized expertise
in directed energy, fiber optics and photonics, and sensor
systems (including remote sensing).
