ANNOUNCEMENTS
MDA, a Maxar Technologies company, announced that its
Forest Alert Service (FAS) space-based capabilities have
enabled
(APP) pulpwood suppliers to
more strategically monitor forest cover loss in conservation
areas. In less than three years since MDA began providing the
monitoring service, APP reports the losses of natural forest
cover in their suppliers’ forest concessions has decreased.
The strategic partnership between APP and MDA launched
in
enabling APP’s pulpwood suppliers to respond rapidly
to detected forest changes. Monitoring land cover changes in
production areas is essential for efficient operational planning
and minimizes illegal encroachment, further protecting high-
value forests.
Employing MDA’s RADARSAT-2 satellite, FAS provides
near real-time space-borne services to deliver critical and
timely information to APP, typically within two days of data
collection. Every 24 days, the system monitors approximately
3.8 million hectares, which also comprises APP’s pulpwood
suppliers and the Giam Siak Kecil Biosphere Reserve.
RADARSAT-2 penetrates clouds and precipitation to detect
subtle forest disturbances, in an area as small as 0.5 hectares.

Spectral Evolution introduces a new leaf clip designed for
single handed operation in the field for remote sensing
applications. The leaf clip features a built-in white reference
and integrated light source with an external data scan trigger.
The light source is separated from the sample to minimize
any possible heat damage. The new design eliminates the
need for a bifurcated cable by consolidating the light source in
the unit. Ergonomically designed it features comfortable side
grips and an external trigger button for scanning. The sample
holder swivels from the white reference to a black background
for target scanning. The leaf clip can be used with Spectral
Evolution’s wide range of field spectroradiometers, including;
Ultra high-resolution SR-6500, High resolution RS-5400
bundle, PSR+ high resolution and unmatched sensitivity, and
RS-3500 high resolution remote sensing bundle. For more
information, visit
Spectral Evolutions RS-5400 provides high resolution and
high sensitivity for remote sensing applications for in situ field
measurements. It now includes an enhanced 1024 element
silicon array and improved spectral resolution.
The RS-5400 is designed for field work with a rugged chassis,
no moving optical parts, and rugged metal clad fiber optic
cable that’s field replaceable. It features one touch operation
with auto-dark current and auto-exposure. Communications
include wireless Bluetooth and USB connection. It includes
DARWin SP Data Acquisition software that is Windows 7/8/10
compatible and saves all files as ASCII.
The RS-5400 provides high resolution/high sensitivity in a
portable spectroradiometer for field or laboratory use. The unit
is lightweight and runs off a 100-240V AC Universal 50-60Hz
power supply or lithium-ion batteries.
