This image and derived map show the distribution of selected vegetation and geologic materials along the Firehole River in central Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.  The left image is a false color composite of Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) bands 52, 31, and 19 (0.85, 0.67, and 0.55 um), RGB.  The map at right shows the spectrally dominant material for each pixel, derived using standardized hyperspectral processing incorporated in the ENVI® image processing system.  Mapping results were compiled using ENVI’s integrated vector GIS capabilities.

The AVIRIS-derived map shows characteristic materials found in alkaline active hot springs environments.  The principal mineral is hydrothermal silica, which has a characteristic shortwave infrared spectral signature.  Kaolinite, indicating more acid waters, is also present in some areas.  Biological elements of the hot springs systems (principally coloring of deposits and/or thermal waters by thermophilic algae) were also mapped.  Remote sensing results like these are being used to compare characteristics of active and fossil hot springs with the goals of improving our understanding of these systems and developing improved mineral exploration models.  AVIRIS data courtesy of NASA/JPL, acquired August 7, 1996.
