General Calendar

May 14-15, 2008. Sixteenth Annual Pennsylvania GIS Conference Announced.

The Pennsylvania GIS Conference will convene again for the 16th year at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel and Convention Center in Camp Hill, PA.  This year’s theme is “Sustaining and Leveraging Our Geospatial Investment.”

Geospatial technology moves ahead, offering us more and more methods and tools for geospatial analysis and information management.  Our geospatial assets continue to grow as local governments and private industry invest in data, people, and services.  And the Commonwealth continues to build the framework of a Spatial Data Infrastructure through programs like PAMAP.  The 2008 PA GIS Conference will explore the challenges and benefits of these continuing trends.

On-line conference registration opens on February 1, 2008.  Exhibitor registration opened December 1, 2007. Interested parties should check the website often as the conference agenda evolves over the winter.

June 4-7, 2008. 4th Workshop of the EARSeL Special Interest Group on Developing Countries in conjunction with GISDECO 8, 8th workshop of the GIS in Developing Countries network: "Integrating GIS and Remote Sensing in a Dynamic World". , Istanbul, Turkey. http://www.earsel-dc.uni-hannover.de/ or http://www.earsel.org/?target=announce/earselevents. E-mail: secretariat@earsel.org. This workshop brings together experts from EARSeL and GISDECO networks. Especially for developing countries, integration of Remote Sensing and GIS offers unique access to primary data on the status of land surfaces, as well as possibilities for analysis, visualisation and development of possible solutions of problems, which due to dynamic changes both nature and humanity are exposed to. Global urbanisation, climate change and its effects on natural and human systems, land use and land cover changes, and salinisation are imminent dangers. The workshop provides a forum for presenting and discussing results, and to exchange expertise and experience among researchers and users engaged in solving the problems of developing countries.

September 8-11, 2008. The Tenth International Symposium on High Mountain Remote Sensing Cartography. http://www.icimod-gis.net/news/showdetail.php?id=193

FIRST Announcement:

The Tenth International Symposium on High Mountain Remote Sensing Cartography (HMRSC X) will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 8 to 11 September 2008. The HMRSC is not new to this Himalayan region as in 1992, when the Second Symposium on High Mountain Remote Sensing Cartography (HMRSC II) was held in Beijing and Lhasa, the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) had the opportunity to host the oral presentation in Kathmandu. However, this is the first time when HMRSC will be solely held in this southern part of the Himalayas in Nepal. ICIMOD in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) will be organizing this HMRSC X with an objective to promote and exchange the experiences on the development and application of remote sensing techniques on high mountainous regions. Keeping up with the trend in the past, the symposium will have two parts. The first part will have oral and panel expositions of scientific contributions and the second part will be a field excursion to one of the mountainous destination in Nepal.

The topics that will be treated in the HMRSC X are diverse that include remote Sensing (RS) techniques, environmental studies, morphological mapping, monitoring of environmental and global change biodiversity, geology and mining, glacier and glacial lake investigations, ecotourism, mountain cartography, etc., which are the fields of direct application of remote sensing techniques.
