Sheraton Pasadena Hotel In its Decadal Survey/Earth Science and Applications from Space: National Imperatives for the Next Decade and Beyond, the US National Research Council recommended a satellite mission to produce global observations of multiple Earth surface attributes for a variety of terrestrial and aquatic studies. The mission will assess the response of ecosystems to natural and human induced changes; identify natural hazards; and map the mineralogical composition of the land surface. Currently known as HyspIRI, this mission is in the conceptual design phase at NASA. It consists of an imaging spectrometer in the visible to shortwave infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum and a multispectral imager in the thermal infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. NASA will convene a science community workshop on August 11-13, 2009, in Pasadena, CA. The primary goal of this workshop will be to review the science goals and measurement requirements and also present precursor science results related to the HyspIRI mission concept. Additional details on the agenda for the workshop as well as workshop registration and hotel information will be forthcoming on the HyspIRI Website: http://hyspiri.jpl.nasa.gov Inquiries about the HyspIRI Science Workshop should be directed to either Robert Green (e-mail: rog@jpl.nasa.gov; telephone:1-818-354-9136) or Simon Hook (e-mail: simon.j.hook@nasa.gov; telephone: 1-818-354-0974).

Second Announcement (Adobe PDF 857Kb). Abstract submission deadline extended to April 30 Dear Colleagues, You are cordially invited to attend the 6th International Symposium on Digital Earth ( ISDE6 ) with the theme of Digital Earth in Action and to visit Beijing, China in September, 2009. ISDE6 will continue the tradition of gathering world-class scientists, engineers and educators to review the progress of digital earth during the last decade and discuss the achievements of digital earth and its future development. Digital earth is a virtual representation of our planet and a global initiative aimed at harnessing the world's data and information resources to develop a virtual 3-D model of the Earth in order to monitor, measure, and forecast natural and human activity on the planet. It has a broad domain related to earth observation, geographic information system, global positioning system, virtual reality, computer technology, network communication, geosciences and social sciences etc. Since the promulgation of the Beijing Declaration on Digital Earth at the First International Symposium on Digital Earth (ISDE) in 1999, digital earth has prospered and made great progress in both theory and applications. The international symposia on digital earth have been held in Canada, Czech Republic, Japan, and the United States every two years since 2001, and Digital Earth Summits were convened in New Zealand and Germany in 2006 and 2008 respectively. The 6th ISDE "Digital Earth in Action" will mainly focus on the technological advances and the various emerging applications linking digital earth and many other relating technologies. http://www.isde6.org/ Guo Huadong ISDE6 Secretariat

Cy Smith, GISP, Associate Conference Chair and Chair of the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO), will be dynamically-facilitating discussion and continuity throughout the conference. Hilary Perkins, GISP, URISA International President, is promoting the use of social networking tools, such as Twitter and Facebook, to tweet and BLOG about individual and collective sessions in real-time. Danielle Ayan, GISP, Program Chair, is “repackaging” conference categories to have meaning for the masses. The new focus is on geospatial solutions for Healthy, Growing, Safe, Educated and Best Managed Communities. In addition, an innovative track of 7-minute “Quick Hits” will be videographed to capture and bring the intellectual capital of URISA International’s notable speakers to the world via post-conference Internet publication. The 2009 Conference Committee, led by Mike Lovett, GISP, Conference Chair, has been especially creative, generating session titles and descriptions such as “Slimming Down with GIS” and “Driving a Hybrid Integration.” You are encouraged to take some time to review some of the sessions scheduled. Distinguished keynote speakers include Dr. Barry Wellar, MCIP, GISP and URISA Past President (1978) and Michael Byrne, GISP, California's first Geographic Information Officer (GIO).
