Applicants for professional certification must successfully complete two criteria to become certified:
Pass a Peer-Review of experience and training, and
Pass the Written Examination for the Specialty Area
Provisional certification is also available in all of the above areas for graduating seniors who have studied the geospatial sciences. The certification is provisional until completion of the experience component.
The Peer-Review process for new certification actions begins with the applicant submitting an application for Certified Photogrammetrist/Mapping Scientist OR Certified Technologist and four (4) reference forms from persons who are familiar with the applicant's work and responsibilities. The ASPRS Certification Committee evaluates the application and personal references. Applicants who successfully complete the Peer-Review process are then eligible to take the examination.
The Examination is structured to emphasize the specialty area of the applicant. However, applicants should be aware that certification in any specialty also requires knowledge in the other two specialties, in addition to questions relating to surveying fundamentals, practice, ethics, and standards. A matrix illustrating the mix of questions by specialty has been prepared for applicant review.
