The Landsat 5 cover images demonstrate extensive coverage provided
by the Landsat series of earth observing satellites and,
especially, the record coverage provided by Landsat 5.
Launched in 1984 and designed to last 3 years, Landsat
5 begins its 25th year of operation on March 1, 2008 and
the 600,000 scenes acquired to date allow scientists,
resource managers, urban planners, and educators to
monitor changes to the Earth’s land surface. The cover
examples illustrate urban growth, depicting the region
near Dulles Airport in Northern Virginia. In 1984 the
area near the airport was marked by development close
to the Dulles toll road.Land north of the airport was in
agricultural use, with some development along Highway
7, running generally parallel to the Potomac River.
By 2007, the region is dominated by commercial
development around the airport and along Highway 28,
which runs north to south east of the airport. The Dulles
toll road has expanded north and west and residential
and commercial development has expanded into the
agricultural region. Shopping Centers, golf courses,
and commercial and residential developments are also
evident along the Highway 7 corridor.

Comparison of the performance of surface models for filtering
lidar data which are derived from morphological operations,
triangulation, and linear prediction to filter lidar data.
Numerical weather prediction model calculations used as
input parameters for atmospheric correction of turbid waters
