PHOTOGRAMMETRIC ENGINEERING & REMOTE
SENSING
JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR PHOTOGRAMMETRY
AND REMOTE SENSING
This month’s cover shows the wealth of information that can be extracted
from a single light detection and ranging (lidar) collection.
This image, created by using only lidar data over downtown
Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is a multi-band combination
of bare earth elevation, height above bare earth, laser
return intensity and non-bare earth slope. Using these
combinations of derivatives from the raw data we can create
pseudo-imagery that can be used to extract information
such as bare earth topography, vegetation and structural
information. It is this wealth of information that can
be achieved by using lidar technology that is prompting
the USGS to work with many partners in the development
and hopeful creation of a future National Lidar Dataset.
This month’s Highlight article discusses the need for a
National Lidar Dataset, and how the USGS is beginning
to take the lead in the creation of such a valuable remote
sensing product. For more information on this image or
the National Lidar Dataset, contact Jason Stoker, Physical
Scientist, U.S. Geological Survey, jstoker@usgs.gov, or
visit our USGS Center for Lidar Information Coordination
and Knowledge page (http://lidar.cr.usgs.gov).
