PE&RS July 1998VOLUME 64, NUMBER 7PHOTOGRAMMETRIC ENGINEERING & REMOTE SENSING JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND REMOTE SENSING
This image shows the completed portion of the 30-meter resolution land-cover data set being produced as a cooperative project between the U.S. Environmental Protection (EPA) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), one of the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium activities. The small-scale image represents Federal Regions 1, 2, 3, and 4. The inset shows the Washington, DC area and illustrates the detail of the land-cover data. The primary data source is Landsat thematic mapper (TM) imagery supplemented by other spatial data. The procedures are described in “Regional Characterization of Land Cover Using Multiple Sources of Data” (January 1998 PE&RS). The approach produces regional land-cover information suitable for a variety of applications, including landscape analyses, policy development, and modeling of nutrient and pesticide runoff. The conterminous U.S. dataset will be completed in December 1999 using teams from both the government and private sector. Established in 1993, the MRLC Consortium is a partnership of federal agencies that produce or use land-cover data. Partners include the USGS (National Mapping, Biological Resources, and Water Resources Divisions), EPA, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For more information, contact the USGS EROS Data Center at 605-594-6114 or mrlc@edcmail.cr.usgs.gov.
