Standards

Looking for information on standards regarding maps, aerial photography, or other geospatial data?  Check the following links for information ...

Federal Geographic Data Committee
The most recent information available on the topic of Accuracy Standards can be found on the FGDC (Federal Geographic Data Committee) web site (http://www.fgdc.gov/) . This site has PDF (Portable Document Format) files that can be downloaded to Adobe Acrobat.  Note that ASPRS was a contributing organization to the FGDC standards effort, and the FGDC Standard provides information necessary to correlate the earlier ASPRS standards to the current standard.

Of special interest to users of the FGDC may be a document prepared by the Minnesota Governor's Council on Geographic Information with support from the Minnesota Land Management Information Center (LMIC) to facilitate use of the FGDC standards.   The Positional Accuracy Handbook: Using the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy to measure and report geographic data quality, October 1999 (33 pages, 920K, PDF) describes how positional accuracy can be measured and reported for databases that contain geographic features like roads, rivers and property lines.  Five practical examples walk you through the process using databases developed at Minnesota Departments of Transportation and Natural Resources, the City of Minneapolis, Washington County and Lawrence Mapping.    All the mathematics needed to calculate vertical and horizontal accuracy statistics are made easy with worksheets available to be downloaded from the LMIC site (Two files in one self-extracting executable, 30K, Excel format).

Printed copies of the Handbook are also available.  See the LMIC site for more information.

ASPRS Interim Accuracy Standards for Large-Scale Maps
In 1987, ASPRS published a booklet in conjunction with ACSM entitled Large-Scale Mapping Guidelines.  This booklet is 52 pages and is stored in our library.  In 1989, ASPRS published a supplement to these guidelines in the July 1989 PE&RS entitled, "ASPRS Interim Accuracy Standards for Large-Scale Maps" (see July 1989 PE&RS, pp. 1038-1040).  The FGDC site (see above) contains material more relevant to today's digital processes; and is also more complete and up-to-date.

If you need a copy of the ASPRS published materials on Accuracy Standards for Large-Scale Maps, we will send you a reprint (a xerox copy) made from our library copy.  Reprints are $1.00/page + postage.  Reprints under 20 pages may be faxed at a rate of $1.25/page.  Therefore, a reprint of the Large-Scale Mapping Guidelines would cost $52 + postage. A reprint of  "ASPRS Interim Accuracy Standards for Large-Scale Maps" would cost $3 + postage or $3.75 by fax. Reprints can be obtained by email: asprs@asprs.org

National Geospatial Program Standards
NGP standards documents, and subsequent updates or changes, available from this site are current and have been approved and authorized by the National Mapping Division Standards Review Board. Also offered are standards documents that are in the draft stages of the approval process. These documents will be labeled, "DRAFT," or if the document has approval for use by USGS contractors and for USGS internal production, it will be labeled, "DRAFT FOR IMPLEMENTATION." All draft documents are subject to change without notice! Standards documents may be periodically updated to reflect changes in policy or to define new or improved data and map specifications. The standards are current as of the version date indicated, please check the web site located at http://nationalmap.gov/gio/standards/. often for the most current document.

Common Lidar Exchange Format Standard (.LAS)
The LAS file format is a public file format for the interchange of LIDAR data between vendors and customers. This binary file format is an alternative to proprietary systems or the generic ASCII file interchange system used by many companies. The .LAS file format is a binary file format that maintains information specific to the LIDAR nature of the data while not being overly complex. ASPRS has endorsed and strongly supports the use of this standard. Further details are available at www.lasformat.org

ASPRS Draft Aerial Photography Standards
The 1995 Draft Aerial Photography Standards have not been officially adopted by ASPRS and are published for general information purposes only.  Questions and comments about the Draft Aerial Photography Standards are welcome.  Please email them to: asprs@asprs.org
