ROGER M. HOFFER TO RECEIVE
SAIC ESTES MEMORIAL TEACHING AWARD

The Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) Estes Memorial Teaching Award will be presented to Dr. Roger M. Hoffer at the Annual Conference of The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) in Anchorage next month. This is the first time the award will be given.

Dr. Hoffer is a retired professor of Remote Sensing, and retired director of the Remote Sensing & GIS Program of the Department of Forest Sciences, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado. His many publications exhibit his strong interest in interpretation and computer-aided analysis of satellite multi-spectral scanner and radar data for forestry and natural resource applications, as well as remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS) interrelationships and applications to resource management. He holds degrees from Michigan State University and Colorado State University. Dr. Hoffer served as president of ASPRS in 1989, and is an Emeritus Member and Fellow of the Society.

This award in honor of Professor John E. (Jack) Estes is funded by SAIC for the purpose of recognizing individual achievement in the promotion of remote sensing and GIS technology and applications through educational efforts. It is given annually and consists of a monetary award and a presentation plaque. The criteria for nominations include education, teaching, mentoring, and training in the areas of remote sensing and GIS. Dr. Allen Watkins, SAIC vice president, will be on hand to present the award. Professors Estes’ widow, Claire Estes, is expected to attend the awards presentation in Anchorage.

Founded in 1934, ASPRS is an international professional organization of 7,000 geospatial data professionals. ASPRS is devoted to advancing knowledge and improving understanding of the mapping sciences to promote responsible application of photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographic information systems and supporting technologies.
