ASPRS Releases Draft Position Paper on Vertical Accuracy Reporting Requirements for Lidar-Derived Elevation Data

The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) has today released a draft position paper on the vertical accuracy reporting requirements for lidar-derived elevation data developed by the ASPRS Lidar Committee’s Working Group on lidar guidelines and standards. This draft is being made available for public comment and feedback with the intention of having an official ASPRS position paper approved at the upcoming annual conference in Denver in May.

The position paper identifies the vertical accuracy reporting requirements that will be recommended by ASPRS when analyzing elevation data generated using airborne laser radar – lidar – technology. Once finalized, ASPRS will recommend all mapping professionals adhere to and follow these guidelines when generating or contracting for mapping products derived from lidar data. As part of the Lidar Committee’s Working Group efforts, the ASPRS guidelines are being harmonized with the relevant sections of the Guidelines for Digital Elevation Data (DRAFT Version 0.3) released by the National Digital Elevation Program (NDEP).

Many ASPRS members and related organizations, including major government agencies and data end users, have for several years been requesting guidelines to follow when incorporating lidar technology into their mapping projects. "While there is still a significant amount of work to be done on a complete set of guidelines, ASPRS is proud to continue to play a leading role in establishing and maintaining standards and best practices for new mapping and remote sensing technologies such as lidar,” said ASPRS President Don Lauer. “Through the on-going efforts of our volunteer committees and working groups such as the Lidar Committee, ASPRS continues to serve the changing needs of its members and members’ clients, including the public."

ASPRS strongly encourages all lidar stakeholders to review the draft paper and provide comments and feedback to the Working Group. A copy can be downloaded from the Lidar Committee section at http://www.asprs.org (under the Photogrammetric Applications Division). Feedback can be sent to lidar_committee@asprs.org.

Founded in 1934, ASPRS is an international professional organization of 7,000 geospatial data professionals. ASPRS is devoted to advancing knowledge and improving understanding of the mapping sciences to promote responsible application of photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographic information systems and supporting technologies.
