The successful military application of
Unmanned
Aircraft
Systems
(UAS)
technologies
to
perform
intelligence,
surveillance and reconnaissance has ignited
the interest of the civil, commercial and
academic remote sensing communities in the
research and operational applications of these
technologies. Law enforcement, homeland
security/border security, aerial mapping, arctic
research, firefighting, flood monitoring, crop
dusting, pollution monitoring, storm research,
HAZMAT detection, search & rescue, volcanic
research, pipeline monitoring, filmmaking,
mining,
farming,
real-estate,
wildlife
monitoring, power line surveying, and damage
assessment are some of the application areas
being investigated. Although the use of UAS
in the National Airspace System (NAS) faces
several challenges, such as the privacy concern
and how to meet aviation safety requirements,
the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
has been directed to create a plan that safely
integrates UAS into the NAS by September 30,
2015.
This special issue of
Photogrammetric
Engineering and Remote Sensing (PE&RS)
will
focus on UAS technologies, such as sensors,
and the current and future applications of UAS
by the civil, commercial and academic remote
sensing communities. Papers covering topics
including, but not limited to, the following are
invited for consideration:
Innovative applications of UAS
technology in areas, such as
emergency response, natural resource
management, wildland fire, forest
health, wildlife surveys, air quality,
and agriculture/crop monitoring
Advances in UAS technology, such as
sensors, especially for small UAS
Data management approaches for
these data including archiving,
processing and dissemination
Integration with other
in situ
, aerial
and satellite data
Creation of new informational
products
All submissions will be peer-reviewed in line
with
PE&RS
policy. Because of page limits, not
all submissions recommended for acceptance
by the review panel may be included in the
special issue. Under this circumstance, the
guest editors will select the most relevant
papers for inclusion in the special issue.
Papers that are reviewed favorably, but will
not fit within the Special Issue, can be revised
and submitted for review as a new paper to the
PE&RS
Editor-in-Chief for possible publication
in a future regular issue of
PE&RS
. Authors
must prepare manuscripts according to the
PE&RS
Instructions to Authors, published in
each issue of
PE&RS
and also available on the
ASPRS web site at Instructions to Authors.
