Users who stepped into a LiDAR scan of a site well-
known to them reported that they felt like they were back
at that site. By extension, presenting topographic data
from other planets also creates the sense of a real place,
albeit one that no human has ever set foot on. I believe it
was this sense of place, and the intuitive understanding of
that place that comes with it, that allowed Dawn Sumner,
one of our core researchers, to collect the evidence she
needed to make a strong case for Gale Crater as the land-
ing site for the Curiosity Mars rover.
We are currently working to create a detailed 3D model
of Mercury, based on data returned from NASA’s Messen-
ger mission, and believe it will similarly form a spring-
board for further discovery.
I expect that affordable VR hardware, combined with
special-purpose VR software, will become the standard
way to work with geospatial data in the near future.

Young has become the first ASPRS Certi-
fied Mapping Scientist-Lidar. Mr. Young
completed the application process, pass-
ing peer review, and then successfully
passed the Lidar examination.
