NEW EDITORIAL COLUMN
PROPOSED FOR
PE&RS
Several of us affiliated with ASPRS are discussing the idea of a gen-
eral interest column in
PE&RS
on a monthly basis related to edu-
cation and professional development of our community. The mem-
bership of ASPRS has from its inception been a balance of members
from government, private industry and academia. This editorial
column would seek to highlight the interaction and importance of
this balance and the accountability and profitable change that it
fosters to grow and implement important ideas and standards. We
are now prepared to move forward with such an initiative with guid-
ance, support, and contributions from interested ASPRS members.
Considering a sector-specific column name (e.g., “
Sector Insight:
.edu
,” “
Sector Insight: .com
,” and “
Sector Insight: .gov
”), this column
would rotate annually between three editors each having 4 columns
in a year that pertain to their particular field of expertise. The
content for “
Sector Insight: .edu
” could focus on the latest teaching
and learning needs and approaches required to advance geospatial
science and technology in academia (K-12 throughhigher education).
The content of “
Sector Insight: .com
” and “
Sector Insight: .gov
” could
focus on opportunities and constraints for workforce development
and training in for-profit and non-profit organizations.
The goal of the column will be to inform membership on edu-
cational and professional development needs of our community,
emergent learning modalities and frameworks in geospatial sci-
ence and associated technologies, and needed skills and experi-
ences to advance workforce development in our respective sec-
tors. Such a journal column will advance the value proposition of
ASPRS for membership in several ways. The column will inform
membership of current pedagogical practices, support members in
life-long learning pursuits, provide contemporary views of work-
force development needs from the viewpoint of geospatial leaders
and experts in our community, and serve as an outlet for geospa-
tial educators to inform our community of educational opportuni-
ties and modalities used successfully in academic courses, work-
shops, webinars, seminars, and workforce training sessions.
The intended audience will include anyone in our geospatial sci-
ence and technology community who wishes to stay informed on
the latest educational and professional development opportunities
that enhance formal academic course work of our student members,
serve to advance career tracks of our early career professionals, and
provide educators creative ideas to improve curricula in academic
courses, workshops, webinars, and training sessions organized and
delivered by various organizations, public and private.
If you are interested in helping implement and sustain this
Sector Insigh
t” column, please send a message to Steve DeGloria
(
) or Melissa Rura (
),
by October 23
rd
, outlining your suggestions for topics, willingness
to submit periodic contributions for the appropriate column sector,
and your availability to serve as a
Sector Insight
Editor for “.edu,”
”.com,” or “.gov” on an annual rotational basis. Members from all
sectors of ASPRS are invited to participate in this initiative.
