THE STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC) EXTENDS A WARM
SUMMER GREETING TO ALL OF YOU.
I
GTF2016was a success! This year, therewereamyriadofworkshops, technical
sessions, a Geoleague challenge, and STEM outreach (Frontier Day) sessions.
The purpose of IGTF is to introduce new research in
the “geospatial” and “imaging” industry while keeping
the idea of technology at the center of discussion. Like
other ASPRS Conferences, IGTF 2016 shared ideas
from intellectual minds and welcomed open discus-
sions to meet the goals of geospatial science, under-
standing the universe and improving the quality of life
of its inhabitants.
This year SAC members and student volunteers
were recognized as ‘student interns.’ This new identity
gave them more responsiblity in their duties and per-
formance. It was a unique opportunity to be more in-
volved with several events organized by ASPRS. SAC
also organized a couple of events as part of activities.
The SAC’s Technical Session
— Integrating In-
formation with Satellite Imagery, incorporated the
diverse research of six students. Topics ranged from
classification and dynamic mapping algorithms, to
using social media information to enhance geospatial
products. We enjoyed the opportunity to showcase
quality student work and look forward to next year’s
conference.
Frontier Day
—Frontier day was one of the scheduled
events with the local, Fort Worth, community. The out-
reach workshops covered a broad spectrum of local and
regional interest such as STEM education, 3D intelli-
gent cities, oil and gas, and public safety.
The SAC is currently working on increasing ASPRS
student membership. WE are committed to bringing
new members to our society to make stronger commu-
nities to face the challenges of the 21st Century.
We leave you with thoughts of a wonderful and produc-
tive summer!
GEOEAGUE 2016
T
he 6
th
annual Geoleague Challenge brought
six highly competitive teams of students
and projects to IGTF 2016.
The challenge celebrated the National Park Service Centennial.
The teams used, freely available, imagery to produce an inno-
vative visualization product featuring the national park of their
choice. These projects inspired us to appreciate and support our
national parks!
We would like to recognize the winning team,
The Caldera
Cruisers
from New Mexico Highlands University, led by Zakiya
Shivji, along with the five other fantastic teams who participat-
ed in the 2016 challenge:
The Longbeach Mapsters
,
California State University, Long beach
The Oregon State Geomatics
,
Oregon State University
The Park Dawgs
,
University of Georgia
The Penn State GeoLions
,
