Headquarters News

Dr. James W. Merchant was named Associate Editor of Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing (PE&RS) during the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) Annual Conference in April. As associate editor, Dr. Merchant will assist PE&RS Editor Dr. Stanley A. Morain in the manuscript review process and in coordination of special issues of the journal. Authors of papers to be peer-reviewed should now submit manuscripts directly to Dr. Merchant.

“Jim is one of the finest and most conscientious reviewers and guest editors in the history of PE&RS,” said Morain. “As the guest editor for the annual GIS Special Issue in years past, he brings to the associate editorship a wealth of background experience that will enable him to step into this new role with virtually no disruption in current peer-review practices and procedures.”

Dr. Merchant is professor in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), Lincoln, Nebraska. He is associate director of UNL’s Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT). In addition, he holds faculty appointments in UNL’s School of Natural Resource Sciences, the Department of Geography, and the Department of Agronomy. Dr. Merchant received a BA in Geography from Towson University, Towson, Maryland, and both an MA and PhD in Geography from the University of Kansas. His work in remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spans three decades.

“We are very pleased that Dr. Merchant has agreed to join our outstanding PE&RS editorial staff,” said ASPRS Executive Director James Plasker in announcing the appointment. “Dr. Merchant’s experience and professional credentials will enable us to continue to serve the Society readership, as well as the broader geospatial community of PE&RS subscribers, with the highest journalistic standards.”

From 1987-1998 Dr. Merchant served as PE&RS associate editor for GIS and, since 1987, he has been guest editor of six special issues of the journal. In 1990 he received the ASPRS Alan Gordon Memorial Award to recognize achievements in remote sensing and GIS, and in 1996 he was elected a Fellow of the Society. In 1997, Dr. Merchant was honored with the John Wesley Powell Award that recognizes significant achievements in contributing to the research of the U.S. Geological Survey. In addition, he was the recipient of the 1998 Outstanding Contributions Award conferred by the Remote Sensing Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers, and, in 1999, the Outstanding Achievements Award presented by the Nebraska GIS/LIS Association.
