INDUSTRY
NEWS
“We are proud to continue to bring competition to Group I
[under 20 lbs] UAS.” says Thomas Rambo, co-founder of Al-
tavian. “Our prior efforts were successful in breaking vendor
lock on non-integrated components such as composite struc-
tures and ancillary parts. This new contract brings the op-
portunity to open the rest of the system (flight control, radio,
payloads, and ground control) for greater integration. All the
technologies that we are proposing for this contract embrace
the US DoD’s Open Systems Architecture objectives and by
adopting this technology will ensure the continued sustain-
ment, upgradeability, and interoperability of Group I UAS for
years to come.”
This contract has a base award period of five years and is
the primary acquisition method for Group I UAS in the Army.
Altavian has been successfully performing on the predecessor
contract since 2012.

EVENTS
This October, the 4
th
Annual Commercial UAV Expo trade
show will host the world’s top UAS vendors showcasing cut-
ting-edge airframes, components, software and services all fo-
cused on commercial applications. The event will be held at the
Westgate Resort in Las Vegas from October 1-3.
Companies from all over the world representing France,
Switzerland, Germany, England, Canada, Australia, Belgium,
Italy, Netherlands, the UK, US and China will all be repre-
sented on the trade show floor showcasing new products and
technologies. International exhibitors include 3D TARGET
SRL, 4DMapper - Geospatial Ecosystem for Enterprise, Ace-
core Technologies,BAE Systems, ComNav Technology Ltd.,
Delair, Flyability, microdrones, Orbit GT,Parrot Business
Solutions,Pix4D,Quantum-Systems GmbH,SBG Systems
S.A.S., SimActive Inc., Terrasolid Ltd., U-Drone Robotics Aus-
tralia,Virtual Surveyor nv, YellowScan, and many others.
In addition to the education content and dynamic show floor,
the event offers exciting networking events and demonstra-
tions from market leading vendors. Attendees will have a
first-hand look at drones in action and the resulting data sets
through a variety of live demo scenarios at the HUVR test site
in Henderson. For the most up-to-date information and to reg-

Climate change and the rise of CO2 in the atmosphere has
highlighted the possibilities of carbon sequestration in soil. Es-
timating sequestration possibilities involves accurately mea-
suring Total Carbon (TC).
TC affects soil characteristics, including color, nutrient ca-
pacity (cation and anion exchange capacity) nutrient stability
and turnover, and subsequently water relationships, aeration,
and cultivation. The accurate measurement of TC can result in
better crop management for cultivated land and better under-
standing of available carbon pools in uncultivated land. VIS/
NIR field spectroscopy offers a fast, accurate and affordable
alternative to lab analysis of TC—an alternative that works
without destroying the sample. Spectral evolution’s PSR+
spectroradiometer is specifically designed for spectral analy-
sis in situ. It’s rugged and reliable with a range of direct at-
tached lenses as well as fiber mount options with a steel-jack-
eted fiber optic cable that’s rugged and field swappable. A full
range spectroradiometer, it covers wavelengths from 350 to
2500nm—UV/VIS/NIR.
Spectral Evolution’s
PSR+ features high resolution and
enhanced sensitivity to allow you to quickly collect clear spec-
tra. Auto-shutter, auto-exposure, auto-dark current capabil-
ities mean no manual optimization between scans. For soil
analysis, the PSR+ can be equipped with a rugged and reliable
sample contact probe, as well as a benchtop probe with sample
compactor. The PSR+ is ideal for taking scans of vertical or
horizontal soil layers in a pit.
Our DARWin SP Data Acquisition software gives you com-
plete control of your instrument interface, access to vegetation
indices as well as the USGS sample library, and saves all spec-
tra and metadata as ASCII files for use with 3rd party software
such as ENVI, TSG, R, Unscrambler and GRAMS. Optional
EZ-ID sample identification software can help you match your
target samples to the USGS, SpecMIN and GeoSPEC mineral
spectral libraries to quickly identify clays. Or with the Custom
Library Builder module, you can create your own soils and TC
library by simply saving your metadata and scans.
NIR spectroscopy can be used in conjunction with comple-
mentary technologies, such as portable XRF where you can use
the data from a PSR+ with the elemental analysis from XRF
technology for a more complete picture of TC and other soil
properties.
