The success of Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth illustrate the value of geospatial data to the general public. Events such as Hurricane Katrina, the war in Iraq, and the war on terrorism expose both the usefulness of the data and the potential for its use (both advantageous and hostile) in ways previously constrained by limited access. John Curlander, former CEO of Vexcel Corporation and now general manager for the Virtual Earth Business Unit at Microsoft, will keynote the session along with Michael T. Jones, Chief Technologist of Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Local.

This full-day classified session will explore the ramifications and implications that commercially available, high quality, and extensive imagery and geospatial data have on national security and the growth of GEOINT analytical expertise outside the government. The desired outcome of the session is to identify emerging challenges and create linkages among interested parties to plan and initiate responses. Topics to be covered include:

  • Commercial capabilities
  • Open Source and Foreign Capabilities
  • Foreign Capabilities & Adversary Behaviors
  • Wrap-up Panel –– A simulation to demonstrate foreign capabilities
