Introduction

ASPRS is pleased to offer fifteen awards totaling more than $40,000 in value. Available to both undergraduate and graduate student-members of ASPRS and others, these resources have been generated with the intention of advancing academic and professional goals within the fields of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. ASPRS recognizes that students are the future of these rapidly evolving fields and encourages all who are qualified to take advantage of these unique opportunities.

Awards are available in the form of cash awards, internship stipends, travel grants, and data. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, and you must be a member of ASPRS for most awards. All awards ask that you submit samples of your work and research goals as part of your application, and that you submit a report to ASPRS outlining your research accomplishments upon completion of your grant period.

The Presentation of the Awards will take place at the “Installation of Officers and Awards Meeting” (and/or other appropriate session) held during the Annual (Spring) Conference of ASPRS

Please see each award description for more details, as each one has specific requirements. You may also want to check out our career brochure, "Shape the Future" for more information on the career opportunities in photogrammetry and remote sensing.

Note: Application deadline for all awards/scholarships for 2010 is Tuesday DECMBER 1, 2009.

Each award has specific application instructions. General instructions for all applicants are listed below.

Please note that electronic submissions of all applications are now required. Paper applications will not be accepted.

This award is designed to facilitate research-related travel by outstanding graduate students in remote sensing and is provided by a grant from the ASPRS Foundation on behalf of individual and corporate contributions to the Foundation in memory of Ta Liang, a skilled civil engineer, an excellent teacher, and one of the world’s foremost air-photo interpreters.

The ASPRS Student Assistantship Grants have replaced the ASPRS Travel Grants and will be awarded for the Annual (Spring) and Fall conferences. The new Assistantships include lodging for each recipient, plus a $100 stipend.  The grants also include complimentary registration to the conference where the recipients serve as Student Assistants.

NEW IN 2009

The Abraham Anson Memorial Scholarship was introduced in 2009.  This $1,000 grant was presented as a memorial to Abraham Anson. It's designed to encourage undergraduate students who have an exceptional interest in pursuing scientific research or education in geospatial science or technology related to photogrammetry, remote sensing, surveying and mapping to enter a professional field where they can use the knowledge of their discipline to excel in their profession.

The John O. Behrens Institute for Land Information (ILI) Memorial Scholarship was also offered for the first time in 2009. This undergraduate award was established by the Institute for Land Information as a tribute to the many contributions of Mr. Behrens to the field of geographic and land related information and technology.  John O. Behrens was a founder of the ILI and the author of many articles about the value of spatial information, land assessment and taxation, and land information policy.   In recognition of Mr. Behrens outstanding contributions over his distinguished career, funds from the ILI have been donated to the ASPRS Foundation to be administered for the John O. Behrens ILI Memorial Scholarship. The grant is for $1,000.

The Francis H. Moffitt Memorial Scholarship was increased to $3,000, a $1,000 increase over the 2008 grant! This award is for study in surveying or photogrammetry leading to a career in the geospatial mapping profession.

The Paul R. Wolf Memorial Scholarship was increased to $3,000, doubling in value over 2008. This award is made to a graduate student in a college or university in the United States, who is pursuing a program of study in preparation for entering the teaching profession in the general area of surveying, mapping, or photogrammetry.
