The ASPRS Awards and Scholarships
program is supported by ASPRS members and participating sponsors through
contributions to the ASPRS Foundation. For more information or to make a contribution,

Application Deadline - The
application deadline for the 2008 awards year is Monday December 3rd
2007.

Introduction
ASPRS is pleased to offer thirteen awards totaling more than $35,000 in
value.
Available to both undergraduate and graduate student-members of ASPRS
and others,
these resources have been generated with the intention of advancing
academic and professional goals within the fields of Photogrammetry and
Remote Sensing. ASPRS recognizes that students are the future of these rapidly evolving fields and
encourages all who are qualified to take
advantage of these unique opportunities.
Awards are available in the form of travel grants, cash awards,
internship stipends, and data. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in an accredited
college or university, and you must be a member of ASPRS for most awards. All awards ask that you submit samples of your work and
research goals as part of your application, and that you submit a report
to ASPRS outlining your research accomplishments upon completion of your
grant period.

has specific requirements. You may also want to check out our

Note: Application deadline for all
awards/scholarships for 2008 is Monday December 3,
2007.

NEW FOR 2008
The Francis H. Moffitt Memorial Scholarship is being offered for the first time this year. This $2,000 grant is presented as a memorial to Professor Moffitt’s lifetime contributions to the photogrammetric surveying profession and the goals of ASPRS and the professional societies he embraced.
The Robert N. Colwell Memorial Fellowship is now valued at $5,000, an increase of $1,000 over the 2007 grant.
The Paul R. Wolf Memorial Scholarship, designed for those considering the teaching profession, is now valued at $1,500, an increase of $500 over the 2007 grant.
The Kenneth J. Osborn Memorial Scholarship, is now valued at $1,500, an increase of $500 over the 2007 grant. |

Robert E. Altenhofen
Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility:
Purpose:
- To encourage and commend college students who display
exceptional interest and ability in the theoretical aspects of
photogrammetry.
Award:
- Cash prize of $2,000 and a certificate.
- The award is administered by the
ASPRS Foundation from
funds provided by the estate of Mrs. Helen Altenhofen as a memorial
to her husband, Robert E. Altenhofen. A past president of ASPRS, Mr.
Robert Altenhofen was an outstanding practitioner of photogrammetry
and made notable contributions to the mathematical aspects of the
science.
Application
In addition to the
application form and letters of recommendation, applicants must
submit the following items:
- A 2-page statement by the applicant regarding plans for
continuing studies in theoretical photogrammetry.
- Papers, research reports, or other items produced by the
applicant that indicate capability in these fields.
- Academic transcripts-- including a separate list of relevant
courses taken with grades received.
Award Selection
- The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the
committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated the
recipient.
- Each item above will carry equal weight in the committee’s
consideration.
Obligation of the Recipient
- The recipient is obligated to provide a final report to ASPRS of
his/her scholastic accomplishments during the period for which the
award is granted.
- This report must be submitted by June of the year following
receipt of the award.

William A. Fischer Memorial
Scholarship
Eligibility:
- Current or prospective graduate student members of ASPRS.
Purpose:
- To facilitate graduate-level studies and career goals directed
towards new and innovative uses of remote sensing data/techniques
that relate to the natural, cultural, or agricultural resources of
the Earth.
Award:
- One year scholarship of $2,000 and a certificate.
- This award is presented by ASPRS with funding provided by a
grant from the ASPRS
Foundation, on behalf of individual and corporate contributions
to the Foundation in memory of William A. Fischer, a pioneer in the
use of remote sensing from space for the study of the planet Earth.
Application
In addition to the
application form and letters of recommendation, applicants must
submit the following:
- A 2-page statement detailing applicant’s educational and career
plans for continuing studies in remote sensing applications.
- A transcript of all college or university level courses
completed and grades received to demonstrate scholastic ability
Note: Submission of technical papers, research reports, or
other pertinent items indicating applicant’s capabilities is encouraged
but not required.
Award Selection
- The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the
committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated as the
recipient.
- Each item above will carry equal weight in the committee’s
consideration.
- Obligation of the Recipient
- The recipient is obligated to provide ASPRS with a final report
of his/her scholastic accomplishments during the period for which
the award is granted.
- This report must be submitted within one year of receipt of the
award.

Leica Geosystems Internship
Eligibility:
- Graduate students of photogrammetry and remote sensing.
- Student member of ASPRS
Purpose:
- The internship provides the award winner with an opportunity to
carry out a small research project of his/her own choice, or to work
on an existing Leica Geosystems project as part of a team.
Award:
- An eight-week internship for graduate students in
photogrammetry. The selected intern must be able to travel to the
Leica Geosystems location to work with Leica personnel at facilities
in Atlanta, San Diego, Denver, Heerbrugg, or elsewhere, as determined by
Leica Geosystems. The internship consists of a stipend of $2,500
plus an allowance for travel and living expenses for the period of
the internship.
- This internship is presented by the
ASPRS Foundation, with
funding provided by Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping, LLC.
Application
In addition to the
application form and letters of recommendation, applicants must
submit the following:
- An official transcript from each college or university attended.

- A proposal for the type of research the intern would like to
conduct. (The proposal should not exceed 1000 words and should state
the significance of the research, the proposed methodology, the
expected results and a schedule. [70%]
- (Research topics should be in the general area of digital
photogrammetry and remote sensing. Topics in an area where Leica
Geosystems has a commercial interest will be considered in a
favorable light.)
Award Selection
- The selection committee will evaluate each application and apply
the weighting factors listed above.
- The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the
committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated the
recipient.
- Proposals will be evaluated by the Leica Geosystems Internship Committee. Final selection will be coordinated with Leica Geosystems GIS
& Mapping, LLC personnel.
Obligation of the recipient
- The intern will provide ASPRS with a final report of his/her
research accomplishments during the period of the internship.
- This must be submitted no later than the first of June in the
year following receipt of the award.

GeoEye Award
This award consists of high resolution digital satellite imagery
Eligibility:
- Full time undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited
college or university in the USA or Canada with image processing
facilities appropriate for conducting the proposed work.
- Student member of ASPRS
Purpose:
- To support remote sensing education and stimulate the
development of applications of high-resolution digital satellite
imagery for applied research by undergraduate or graduate students.
Award:
- A grant of data valued at up to $2,000, and a certificate
inscribed with the recipient’s name and his/her institution.
- This award is presented by the
ASPRS Foundation, with
funding provided by GeoEye.
Application
In addition to the
application form and letters of recommendation, applicants must
submit a brief proposal (two pages or less) with the following
information:
- Title: The title must describe the proposed
research.
- Objective: Clearly state the purpose(s) of the research and the
applications that it might address.
- Description of research study area and data needs: Provide a
brief description of physical features of the study area. Consider
the area to be covered and the amount of digital satellite imagery
needed for the study. Include information on the scene
identification, coverage date (s), and quality rating. Note: Only
GeoEye data from the archive can be acquired under this award.
- Applications: Describe the possible applications that might
result from this research and indicate possible users.
- Analysis procedure(s): Provide a brief description of the
analysis approach, indicating why digital satellite imagery is
appropriate.
- Anticipated results: State the specific results desired in
performing this research with the use of the digital satellite
imagery.
- Budget: Itemize the budget for the grant, specifying GeoEye
products (up to $2,000) needed for the research. Note: Only GeoEye
products can be requested on your budget. Also identify other
support for the research, e.g., computer facilities (provided by the
college/university); fieldwork (grant no. “yy” from the ABC
Foundation”); manuscript preparation (personal funds); etc.
- List all courses, workshops, and other training/experience that
demonstrate your capability to conduct proposed research. Obtain
approval signature of student faculty adviser.
Obligations of the Recipient
- The recipient must prepare a written report of the project and
submit it to ASPRS and GeoEye for possible company use. The report
is due within one year of receipt of data from.
- The recipient (or his/her representative) must attend
presentation ceremony during the annual meeting to receive the award
certificate.

Ta Liang Memorial Award
Eligibility:
- Graduate Student members of ASPRS.
Purpose:
- To facilitate research-related travel by outstanding graduate
students in remote sensing.
- Such travel includes field investigations, agency visits,
participation in conferences, or any travel that enhances or
facilitates a graduate research program.
Award:
- A grant of $500 and a hand-engrossed certificate.
- This award is presented by ASPRS, with funding provided by a
grant from the ASPRS
Foundation on behalf of individual and corporate contributions
to the Foundation in memory of Ta Liang, a skilled civil engineer,
an excellent teacher, and one of the world’s foremost air-photo
interpreters.
Application
In addition to the
application form and letters of recommendation, applicants must
submit the following items:
- A 2-page statement detailing the plan for research-related
travel and how it fits into the applicant’s research and educational
objectives
- A transcript of all college-level courses completed and grades
received, class rank, and, if available, scores on the Graduate
Record Examination, to demonstrate scholastic ability.
- A description of the applicant’s extracurricular activities,
particularly as they relate to community service.
Award Selection
The selection committee will evaluate each application, applying
necessary weights as indicated below:
- 40% on the basis of scholastic record
- 30% on the basis of the research travel plan
- 20% on the basis of letters of recommendation
- 10% on the basis of community service activities
Obligation of the Recipient
- The recipient is obligated to provide ASPRS and Ta Liang’s
family, a report of his/her accomplishments during the travel for
which the award is granted.
- This report must be submitted within one year of receipt of the
award.

Intergraph Scholarship
Eligibility
- The award is restricted to members of ASPRS. It is intended for
a student who is currently pursuing graduate-level studies or who
plans to enroll for graduate studies in a recognized college or
university in the United States or elsewhere.
Purpose
- The purpose of the award is to facilitate graduate-level studies
and career goals adjudged to address new and innovative uses of
signal processing, image processing techniques, and the application
of photogrammetry to real-world techniques within the earth imaging
industry. This award is presented by a grant from the
ASPRS Foundation on
behalf of corporate contributions to the Foundation by Intergraph, a
technology company that provides innovative solutions to the earth
imaging industry.
Award
- The award consists of a one-year Scholarship in the amount of
$2,000 and a certificate.
Application
In addition to the
application form, applicants must submit the following items:
- A 2-page statement detailing applicant’s educational and career
plans for continuing studies in photogrammetric applications.
- Two completed reference forms or letters from faculty members who have
knowledge of the applicant’s capabilities.
- Technical papers, research reports, or other pertinent items
produced by the applicant and indicating capabilities in this field
may be submitted with the application, but are not required.
Selection
- The Intergraph Scholarship selection committee will evaluate
each application and apply equal weight to each of the items listed
above. The applicant who, in the opinion of the majority of the
committee, has the highest overall ranking will be designated as the
recipient.
Obligation of the Recipient
- The recipient is obligated to provide to the Society a final
report of his/her scholastic accomplishments during the period for
which the award is granted. This report must be submitted within one
year of receipt of the award.

Paul R. Wolf
Memorial Scholarship
This Award is administered by the
ASPRS Foundation from funds
donated by the friends and colleagues of Paul R. Wolf as a memorial to
him. Recognized nationally and internationally, Paul was an outstanding
educator and practitioner of Surveying, Mapping, and Photogrammetry and
a great friend of the Society. As author, teacher, and mentor, Paul made
significant educational and academic contributions to these fields.
- The purpose of the Award is to encourage and commend college
students who display exceptional interest, desire, ability, and
aptitude to enter the profession of teaching Surveying, Mapping, or
Photogrammetry.
- The Award consists of a certificate and a check in the amount of
$1,500.
